Default stupid things "car people" say

My 3/4 race cam thread got me thinking of all the things stupid people say. For instance " I had a friend who's car was so fast he would put a $20 bill on the dash, if you could grab it when floored you could keep it". or my 350 powered whatever runs 10s and I drive it everyday. What stupids things have you been told? Surely a group of true car people have heard better!

There was an ignorant parts runner at one of my preferred parts places once. He tried to argue the merits of a Points distributor over HEI, that it was somehow more reliable, made more power, blah blah blah. We just tried to ignore him. On a return trip, we discovered he'd been fired. He was telling other customers about his 85 thunderbird that could do 180 MPH on I75 all the time. I think the counter guys just got annoyed with him more than anything.

I never understood the logic in that. Why lie over something when you know you'll eventually be called on it. My uncle had a 427 corvette once and some genius asked what kind of motor it had (the emblems are right there on the hood, kind of obvious) my uncle just told him it was a destroked 283 and it could barely get out of it's own way.

Being an Olds guy, I am completely fed up with the belief of supposed "car guys" (usually Chevy guys) who believe that an Olds motor and a Chevy motor are the same thing... like literally, a Chevy 350 and an Olds 350 are identical in every way except for the names on them.

Back in HS I heard people describe how they "hooked up" their 2.8 Firebirds... then when tossing out terms like "porting" and "polishing" were met with quizzical looks, and "no, i meant with my K&N air filter and cherrybomb muffler, and of course the window stickers." Or the guy who said his 4.3 Monte was "da bomb" and could blow away my 442, my friend's Monte SS, or my other friend's Choo Choo Customs El camino SS because it "could powerbrake" and didn't "waste its power on making noise" since his car was quieter than ours.

It's not a car, but I head some jimmy at work, when trying to sell his 20' sailboat, say that it went so fast that it would get completely airborne over waves.

I have actually used this one, because it actually did happen: I was riding in my friend's Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 with the 6.1 Hemi, and he stomped it and actually dislodged snot from my nasal cavity, and I felt it hit the back of my throat. How's THAT for a description?

Or my honda is fast. Even though all they did was put a k&n on it and some exhaust. Oh yeah and heated the sprigs to lower it and took the front bumper off to make room for there future super over sized intercooler.

I can't believe how many times I've heard about what a "little powerhouse" the 2.8L V6 is, even in factory form; maybe it's just a case of different people having different opinions on what a "powerful" engine is.
I was at my local track a couple years ago shootin' the s*** with someone before T&T started and he said "the Camaro on the other side of this trailer (that we were standing beside) looks like it's going to kick some serious ass." After the conversation ended, I walked around the trailer to take a peak at this "Camaro" - which was a Ford Maverick.

Installing rims or wheels that cost more then the value of the car( should use that money instead to fix those rust spots and do body work or fix that failing engine and drivetrain)....especially low riders guys? Only because your ride have nice rims or wheels doesm't mean you have a nice ride

Agreed... it certainly looks like a "work in progress" type of picture after they got the fenders opened up.

I hate the "oh sweet man, you have a 442?!?!?! what kinda engine you got in it? 350? 442?" You can just TELL they mean a Chevy 350.

I had a guy ask me that once when I was up at the machine shop showing my machinist/engine builder videos of the engine he put together for me.
A customer that was standing at the counter shootin the bull asked if it had a 442cid engine in it.
I said, "No, it's a 455".
It was kind of odd the look he had on his face. It was a look of disappointment as if a 442cid engine would be better than a 455.
My machinist just gets a kick out of those guys. He's a HUGE Chevy guy but he's one of the few that actually knows his way around an Olds engine.

If I had the money to dump into it, I'd have a custom 442cid engine built just because, in the long run, it'd be easier to answer that question with "yes" than having to explain the "no."

People are always exaggerating the performance of their cars ( whether current or past ). Like a guy with a 71 Chevelle with a stock 350 that can 'pull the front wheels off the ground', rev to 8000 RPM, or can go 150+mph on the highway. People just need to shut the **** up.

My friend actually once claimed he and a buddy built their first car together ( Mopar ) when they were teens. According to him it was so powerfull that on it's maiden voyage yanked the front wheels off the ground, hit a tree, and totalled the car. It was a '10 second car'.

I hear alot of Chubby heads say 'why do you guys even bother with building an Olds'. It's like they just can't fathom anybody wanting to build anything other than a SBC.

Sadly, not the first of its kind ad that I've ever seen.

Still, I'm shocked that people think Olds and Chev motors are one in the same. If I ever get the chance, I'm going to impress the hell out of a Chev guy by removing my intake without removing the distributor.

Or, just change your spark plugs without pulling off the front wheels and scalding your hands on the hot exhaust manifolds.
