I know I'm partial because I have one, but to me, the best looking one is the 71, IMHO. It's very close to the 72, but there's a few things that are pretty cool about the 71. For one, the lower than standard production numbers (around 7500 total) and additionally, the last year that the 442 was marketed as its own separate model and a 455 came standard. The hood stripe looks better than the 72 on the standard hood. Plus, there's not as many 71 442s today than there were made. Can't say that with 72s. It seems there's about 2,000 more 72 442s today than Olds produced.

The front end, IMO, looks the best, and although I like 69s and 70s, the hood tooth has never been kind to me.

The tail lights look better than the 72, as I'm not a fan of the dividers. The best looking 442 tail end specifically belongs to the 73 though. For whatever reason, those taillights look awesome.

I like most of them, and I doubt I'd turn one down, but the 71 will always hold a special place in my eyes.

For me it's '70, '69, '71/72, then '85-87. I'm partial to the '70 model due to my father's Rallye. I don't like the larger grill found on the '71/72 models, and between the two, the '71 edges out as I like the tail lights better.

My three favorite muscle cars are the '70 Judge, '70 Rallye 350 & '69 H/O.

PS Should have put the body style range in the poll - there's no option for '70-72

You left out a choice for "the one whose title is sitting upstairs in the safe."

I'm most partial to my '86, simply because of the sentimental value contained in it. That's why I'll never sell it, I have no reason to.

That aside, whether I prefer '64-'72 is largely a matter of my mood at the time. Today, the magic year is 1968.

this post just got me thinking, this is a olds site that most come for advice..... why don't we have a sticky section of Oldsmobile archives?

this section will be a detailed list of everything that makes that specific year/make/model specific

69 442 is the best looking. I think it is the best looking of all the 60's and 70's cars. It also had beter fit and finish than most of that area cars. It was not the fastest but the W30 was very cool as was the 69 H/O and W31 they all were quick. I used to have 5 69's I should have kept a few.

71-72 is sweet with the 70 behind those two.

i hate the colonade series 442s although i love the regular supremes

of the G-gbody ones i'd go 87-86-85... 85 last because the grill is kinda ugly.

Of the G-body 442s, I'm a little different, but again, i'm partial. I'm split between '86 and '85 for favorite. Each has something about it that makes it better than the others. '86 because it has the nicest grille IMO, '87 because it has the silver dash inlays and not the tacky faux wood trim, but '85 because it has the better engine. Slap some '86 grilles in an '85 with the dash inlays from an '87, and it'd be as perfect as a stock G body 442 can get. '87 is a distant 3rd, very distant. Not because of the euro nose, which I like, but simply because the seats do not recline . I won't drove frequently a car whose seats do not recline if there are those that do, and the whole point in getting one of these cars is to drive it.

87 seats are very comfortable anyway, even though they don't recline.

I had a 71 442 convert in High School and still feel my heart miss a beat when I see one. Those huge grills, the tailights, the quarter panels (on the converts anyway) were GM styling in one of their best hours. But the one that absolutely steals my soul is the 69 convert. My brother had one before I got my license and it was the car I dreamt about until a year and a half ago when I bought my own. The tail lights, the thin black grills and the fender bulges just take my breath away! Sixty nine for the win!

This poll is flawed. It should be grouped 64 - 67, 68 - 72, 73-77, 79-80, 85-87, and whatever 90's there were.

That being said, my favorite 442 is the 1970.

One thing I've always found attractive about the G body 442s is that, even though they were but mere shadows of those once glorious numbers, the Olds muscle car still outlasted all the others, El Camino, F body and Mustang notwithstanding. Long after the Chevelle SS, Gran Sport, LeMans, GTO, Charger, 'Cuda, Demon, Roadrunner, Torino, Cyclone, et. al. were relegated to automotive folklore, the Olds 442 shouldered on in 4 barrelled spirit. That is the biggest thing that attracted me to the actual car I currently own back in 1994.

It does not mater were I or anyone ranks a car as long as you like it. I think the 69 is the best but that does not mean that I don,t like other years. I have a 86 cutlass that I'm building and I like the body line a lot have since 81.

Its hard to beat the acceleration of the 60s-early 70s 442, they were the most balanced of the muscle cars in my opinion. The later G-bodys rode and handled even better, plus got much better fuel economy. I agree with the other comment that the 442 has stood the test of time, Chevelle, GTO, etc have long faded from their manufactures lineup.

Guess I didn't really answer the question!

I didn't vote in the poll as my number one hardtop selection was not represented in the poll, but I think (tied for 1st):

Best Looking Hardtop 442:

1971

Best Looking Convertible 442:

1968

3rd Place (but at a magical place)
1987

You present a valid argument. Throw some larger width and diameter wheels, and take away some rubber on the first two, and I am easily swayed. I definitely prefer the larger grilles of '71 over that of '70, and also have fond appreciation of the unique separated headlights of '67 and '68.

Isn't that often what happens when a car is redesigned, the only thing linking it to its past is the name? My point was that Olds could have changed names too, but would the G-body Hurst/Olds or 442 been nearly as cool or desirable if they also changed names? I probably wouldn't have ever bought mine if it was some other name. It's funny how a car can be vastly different from one that preceded it, but as long as the name stays the same, is accepted? Or contrary, if the car stays the same but the name changes, it is seen as a whole new car? Just imagine what the '80s could have been like if, instead of Monte Carlo SS, Chevy had the Chevelle SS; if instead of the Grand National, Buick had the Gran Sport; if instead of the Grand Prix (which along with the Monte Carlo started life as a different class of car), Pontiac soldiered through with the GTO and at least a vague attempt, any attempt, at performance from the "performance division?"

Oh, but Olds DID muck it up by having an 84 Calais being vastly different than an 85 Calais. They had to ressurect the Salon name to take its place on the RWD. Which befuddles the hell out of those that don't follow Oldsmobiles.
