Are you certain that the hook on the end of the cable is attached inside the transmission?

I thought the TH350 used a vacuum kickdown?

the Vacuum Modulator controls part thrdle up shifting and the cable controles down shifting or "passing gear"

Vacuum modulator controls shift firmness and also the upshift points during part throttle shifting. Cable controls kickdown into second gear when jumping to WOT.

My first thought was also that the cable fell off the hook inside the trans, or was siezed, but he says its moving freely and still hooked on.....

So, any other ideas?

From what I remember (it's been a while since I was inside my TH350) the cable hooks to a "lever" inside the trans and the other end of the lever rides against the end of a valve, or a rod that actuates a valve. Maybe the valve is not moving or the passage that it feeds is blocked?

You asked if a shift kit would cause this - did you recently install one? If so, perhaps the spring for that valve is installed incorrectly? I would have to look at my shift kit installation instructions at home to see how everything goes together to see if that is even possible, though.

Downshift gear depends upon RPM (seen at governor, I think). Anyway, downshift is not necessarily to 2nd gear, it can go to 1st if the RPM is below a certain limit. I'm sure you know that, I'm just stating it for others who may not know.

I'm not that familiar with the 350 trans but did you do anything to the governor lately? Is the kickdown cable pulling the lever the correct amount? I believe the later 350 kickdown cable is adjustable.

You know, I have a similar issue. I have a TH350 that I had a mechanic put in for me. When I picked it up he said the kick down wasn't working properly. At the time I was too stupid to ask why. I'm sitting in the same boat as you my friend.

I did not do anything to the governor, and i did not recently install a shift kit but there is a kit installed.

quaz when you stop over ill let you feel it may be it isn’t pulling out all the way?? Ill have to compare it to yours. But I know the cable is fine.
