Default olds serial numer help

ok, one of the guys i work with has a 1970 cutlass and he was wanting to know more about it if he can. i got his vin# to try to find out more about the car. i ran it through a vin decoder but the last 6 digits of the vin happen to be the serial number. if there is a site to decode this would it tell me more info on the car. we are wanting to know what engine, transmission, and what ever else we can find that came in the car.

1970 the VIN doesn't tell you that information. He'll need a build sheet to determine that information.

His VIN will read something like 336570M165325.
Here's how it breaks down:
3 = division (Oldsmobile)
36 = series (Cutlass V8)
57 = body code (2 door coupe)
0 = model year (1970)
M = assembly plant (Lansing Michigan)
165325 = sequence number (production sequence number starting with 100001)

EDIT: the VIN will tell if it was a straight 6 or V8 car, but that's it. No trans info will be in there.

Post up the first 7 digits of his VIN, there are ways to determine original engine size(350 or 455) and transmission. Plus, if the rear axle housing is original, you can get the code that is stamped into the rt side axle tube, and determine original gear ratio.

There is also a Fisher Body tag on the driver's side firewall, in the area of the master cylinder and wiper motor. This can decode build date & factory, original paint and interior, and possibly some other info.

If the car is not a 442 or Cutlass Supreme SX, expect a 350 (with a Turbo 350 assuming it's an automatic).

Did you purposely select an example VIN that could not exist?
(The 57 body code was the notchback roofline used only on the 42 series Supremes that year)
