Default Anybody here every play with a Fiero?

It would be cool as hell to but a turbo busa motor in one. But seriously how hard would it be to put the 4.0 aurora motor/trans or a northstar in one? I bet that would haul ass lol

Pffft, drop a Poncho 455 in there mated to a Riviera transaxle. Yes, it's been done. I've got a copy of High Performance Pontiac around here somewhere with an article on it.

Stock they are a piece of sh*t with a Chevette front end and a Pontiac 6000 "rearend"(front end with no steering components).

The addition of a powerful engine seems to help things a lot and one popular swap is the 3800 Series II supercharged..I think the cradle even bolts in.

Well I have had 11 of them. Aurora's and Northstars are pretty easy except for the wiring harness. You can put almost any engine you want in them. My fav is the Super Duty 4 cylinder.

ha, at the state fair last year during the burnout competition there was a supercharged 3800. that things sounded super mean. however it broke during the competition. but it was claimed to run high 12's with that motor and on street tires

Not entirely true. That's a decent analysis for the early ones, 84-87, but you're dead wrong if you lump them all in there the 1988s were an entirely different animal altogether.

Yes, I own a 1988, and, its one of the most fun toys I've had. I highly recommend one to anybody, and $ for $ the 3800 swap is probably the best way to do it... power and fuel economy.

It depends on what year your start with, and how much work you do yourself. It can be done for around $4k if youre handy and do some cutting/welding/work yourself. Out of pocket, and if you dont get good deals, could easily be an $8k or more swap.

Fixed costs:

fuel pump upgrade (esp if a 4cyl)
motor mount set
custom headers/exh
re-pin and splice wiring harness (buy donor 6cyl one to modify if you use a duke coupe)
buy donor engine
if you go with the 4t60e trans with OD buy that
axle shafts to go with the 4t60e

so on so forth, you get the picture. If you seriously want to do it hit up www.fiero.nl and read through the tech section. tons of modified fieros on there. Oh yea, and I recommend starting with an 88.

What about the 5.3V8 that came in some late model Impala's and Grand Prix's. I would think that might be easier than the Northstar since the engine is physically smaller. Not to mention the engine is a lot more reliable.

I would really like to do one with the 4.0 Aurora motor but i haven't found any that have been done and i doubt i could figure it all out. Seems like a supercharged 3800 will be the easiest and would probably get some good mileage to. I bet the newer 5.3 out of the impala would be a bit pricey

I heard the 3.4 DOHC was a fun swap too, since that engine belonged in a sports car, not a lumina....

as someone that ordered his '85 fiero se 2m6 manual 4-spd in august of 1984, i have to correct you too.

front suspension is chevette '84-'87, with a complete redesign for '88, the fireo's last year. a koni upgrade helped that immensely.

the rear sub-chassis is all X body(fwd), not A body(fwd). the v6's subchassis is different from the 4's version. a koni suspension kit helped out back there too, along with an addco rear sway bar. i chose to not use the herb adams bar as it was way too much bar for the car.

with the above being said, the car is way too light and would likely pull wheelies easily. when the weight shifted, it would be very difficult to control, as in a road racing circuit.

IMO, I'd go with the supercharged 3800, for the sole purpose of the aftermarket. Much greater on the 3800 than the twin cam. Also, people have had very good luck with turbo'ing the 3800. There's even one guy on the W-body forum with a twincharged 3800 (turbo'd plus the stock supercharger). Also, you could upgrade the 3800 to a Gen V blower (I'm not sure on much about this though.)

A 3800 Supercharged swap would be like a chevy swap into an olds, just because there are alot of them doesnt mean its cool. LOL.

Yes, because the two engines offered in the fiero (depending on year, 1984 was 4 cyl only) were the Chevy version of the iron duke with horsepower ratings ranging from 85 to around 105 depending on the year, and in 1985-1988 cars a POS Chebby 60* v6 in the form of a 2.8 with the crappy oiling and premature bearing wear.

Both of which were awesome Pontiac motors that its important to keep in the car so it stays true to its heritage...

Lets be serious here and not turn this into another one of "those threads". If anything a BOP motor like a 3800 is more appropriate in a Pontiac than a Chebby under your argument anyways.
