Default What rear end for a 1988 cutlass

I'm picking up a 1988 Cutlass Supreme it has a 307 with 200-4r trans and a posi rear. What type of rear came stock in these cars? (8.5 rear or the Monte SS type 7.something ring gear?) Thanks

7.5" rear. Could be a few different ratios, but I'm thinking its not gonna be anything deeper than 3.08:1.

The 8.5" ONLY came in the '84 Hurst Olds, '85-'87 442, and Buick GNs.

'84 H/O's only. '83 had a 7.5" stock.

If your car doesn't have a weird arse option, you most likley have 2.14's in a 7.5" rear. Could have up to 2.7x's as an option, I was told

In '88 you could have up to a 3.08. And it if has a TH-2004R I don't think you could get the 2.14. My '87 had 2.56's which seemed to be more common.

They either came with a 2.56 or 3.08 7.5 for 1988. Most came with the 2.56supposedly. Mine did and is very soon getting 3.42's.

Thanks for the info. Can this rear live behind a stock 1970 Olds 350. I'm picking the car up tonight. The body is staight just needs work on the bottom of the doors. I think I'm getting a good deal on the car for $400.

I added a girdle cover and a powertrax no slip. The 403 would spin both tires easy and no problems at all. The only reason I am adding 3.42's is it towed my boat like crap.

Unless you plan on A) beating the snot out of it or B) racing it with slicks, the rear should live a while. But if its 2.56's, you'll want them outta there real quick anyway.
