Default Question

Whenever I pull up Oldspower.com on my browser, I set it up so I'm not logged in. I noticed as of today that if I'm not logged in I can't see the classified section of this site. Anyone else have this problem or is it just me? The classifieds are pretty much the only thing I look at.

If this was changed, can anyone tell me why? Just curious.

It was changed, for various reasons. As long as one has a working account, it shouldn't be a problem.

Yeah it's kind of weird.. The first time it happened to me I thought my cookies were messed up, so I cleared them, relogged in and it still did it.

Oh well, I just click Search and then do whatever, usually clicking New Posts.

Default Log In Required ?????????

Has something else been changed in addition to seeing the classifieds only if you are logged in? I went on OP to see "TODAY'S POSTS" and it said you are not logged in.........does this mean everyone has to now be a member and log in every time to see/read posts............????????

Only select posts (classifieds) have been removed from view for those not logged on. The search function has been disabled to those not logged on either.

This reasoning is twofold.

While it IS a hassle for the lurkers (we do apologize for that) it prevents unknowns from e-mailing me (ADMIN) about posts several months or years old, asking how they can get information or if the item is stil for sale. People using google search will often pull up a post from 2004 and just email Admin thinking we own it. Now when they click the google link, they will be unable to read it.

Second reason is to protect our membership from the ever increasing fraud and phishing issues. Some post e-mail addresses rather than just using the more secure PM system. We understand several members maynot frequent OP to check PM's. Search spiders scour sites and forums for e-mails and other forms of data (phone numbers) etc.

Honestly, if you a member in good standing the impact is absolutely minimal. If you are a member and do not wish to be identifed as being ONLINE, there is setting that will make you invisible. You can log on, and use the "remember me" block next to the log on. Then go into the "User CP" (control panel) Then select "Edit Options". The very top block in that folder is "use invisible mode"

We are not the only forum that employs this simple "security" procedure. If there are anymore questions, feel free to post them here, and I will answer them accordingly.

I understand everything you have said, but you haven't answered my question or don't quite understand it.....First I have since realized anyone (including non-members) can still go on OP if they go through one of the forums.........But in the past you were able to simply go onto the OP site, and from the list of choices (cp user, forums, gallery, todays post, search etc.) choose "TODAY'S POSTS" which was a quick means of reviewing the days posts without logging in....now "TODAY'S POSTS" is not one of those choices. Even now when I do log in with user name, it only brings up "NEW POSTS"....is there a way to review only "TODAY'S POSTS" or has that been dropped as an option?

I still see the option and just used it. It is on the top menu bar where it says "New Posts" sandwiched between FAQ and Search. Also tried the main page and the primary forum page and it worked there. I have mine set to automatically log me in though. Maybe you have to be logged in to see this?

I just checked with IE and you have to be logged in to get the "New Posts" option. I would check the "Remember Me" box and you will auto log on everytime you visit us. That should solve all your issues. If you don't use the remember me box can I ask why? If it is a shared computer I understand, if not then I don't see the point in NOT using it.

Again, let me repeat..........I want to use "TODAY'S POSTS" not "NEW POSTS".....I know you have to be logged in to use "NEW POSTS"......again, let me repeat.....in the past I could just go onto the site (without logging in by user name), click on "TODAYS POSTS" and read everything posted for the day........it was quick and easy, NOW it's gone...............

I believe this may answer your question:

"Today's posts" are no more. Here's the reason-- if someone posted something for sale today, then it would end up on "today's post" and therefore the "security" issue would be bypassed. Thus, you have to log in to view "new posts" or you'll just have to search around "manually". By default of how it works makes "Today's Posts" obsolete.

Non-members don't get the free ride they once did. So if you can log on, do it. If not, you only get to see what's available to non-members. Gotta buy the cow to get all the milk, now.

If you auto log in and click new posts that should pop up everything that is new from your last visit. If you visit once a day that should be the same as today's posts. That should work pretty close.

You are right, that is the answer to my question.....not that I like it much, since I have been spoiled with the quick and easy use of the "Today's Posts".

Maybe in the future, someone can program the system so that the "Today's Post" format can be re-instituted while at the same time excluding the classifieds…………

I am learning more and more about this software every week. Perhaps there are some settings to do that, but until I become an expert, this will have to suffice.

another issue:

logged in automatically, read posts in various forums, etc.
went elsewhere from here, came back via the front door(typed address), all the posts i had read were showing as new again/still, even the posts where i was the last poster.

that's a new one.

your computer dumped the cookies. If you delete cookies, all the posts are "new" again.

Right, but when you logged out (only assuming you "logged out" becasue you used the "front door" to come back in) you will see a blurb that says "all cookies cleared" If you just hit the browser to close the site, then the cookie will stay.

Make sense?
