Re: Robb MC theromostat housing
Yeah ive got an aftermarket thermostat housing. I bought the "Chrome One" from summit racing because I just wanted something cheap. The stupid thing leaks slightly no matter how tight the bolts are!
Right now the temp fix was to load up both sides of the gasket with gobs of RTV sealant! I Wish there were 3 bolts on the thermostat housing / intake!
How much are they running?

Re: Robb MC theromostat housing
Are you aware that you can get a cast housing from the auto parts store that has a fairly thick flange? I bought one of these about 25 years ago after my brother-in-law cracked the corner off my original by over-torquing it (beer and engine assembly don't always mix). I have never had an issue with it.
FOUR SEASONS Part # 84841, $15.70 from Rock Auto.

For the money you should be able to stick your d*ck in it.... but no, it's just a fancy billet aluminum piece that looks cool. I'll stick with my 40 year old factory jobber that still doesn't leak.

Re: Robb MC theromostat housing
X2, a very high quality unit. Seals well and you can position the outlet and block off the bypass.

You cant run 4 corner cooling with a stock stat, and not look as cool as this does,The Victor intake has no rear cooling openings..........There are other ways But a $100 in the whole scheme of my car I felt was worth it...........Jerr

Re: Robb MC theromostat housing
RobbMc makes good stuff. OTOH, I am running an iron housing on one of those flat stock iron intakes with ultra black RTV and no gasket (didn't have one handy when I put it on). No leaks. If you are getting leaks, one or the other surface is warped or pitted, or you are raunching one bolt down all the way and then the other one, instead of tightening them back and forth a little at a time.

i want an aluminum housing because i can't get the iron one to seal on a my aluminum intake. i think its because of the dissimilar metals because everytime i have a leak i check and the bolts are a little loose. i currently have a chrome one on there and the first thing i did before installing it was take the chrome off the base. i used a sander at work that had a nice hard flat surface on it to sand off the chrome. that leads me to believe its the metals. robbmc is the only place i've found and aluminum one don't care about bling i just want it to seal.

So you have had a stock cast iron one and now a cheap chrome one on, correct? I am willing to bet the stock cast one may have been warped, and the cheap chrome jobber is a POS that was not flat to begin with.
It is not dissimilar metals, there are literally tens of thousands out there with stock housings on aluminum intakes that don't leak.
That RobbMC stuff is top notch though!

the stock one was definitely warped. the one after that wouldn't seal worth a damn and the chrome one was the best one yet. it was at least flat. this is my second performer intake too. had the current one cleaned and checked at the machine shop so its not the intake either.

Re: Robb MC theromostat housing
Well, I have used the cast housing I posted above on my original iron intake manifold, a Performer 350 aluminum intake manifold, and a Performer RPM aluminum intake manifold with absolutely no sealing issues. There's definitely enough thickness to it that you're not gonna warp it by overtorquing the bolts, and if there is any issue with it you could easily resurface it with that thick flange. It is definitely NOT the same as the flimsy chrome one.
Give it a try, it's only $15 or so.

Re: Robb MC theromostat housing
My cast iron one on my aluminum intake doesn't leak either. One of your surfaces isn't flat. If the bolts keep comming loose on you, try some locktite.

Re: Robb MC theromostat housing
I have had sealing issues on my performer intake also. I used the chrome and leaked no matter what I did. Even the RobbMc had a slight leak with a gasket and light amount of RTV. I am using RTV high temp copper now, no gasket and no leaks, so far. I am thinking it is this intake, I believe even the stock one also had a slight leak. Stock housing on the truck with the aluminum SP2P intake and no leaks. How is the four corner cooling set up? Is there any actual cooling benefits? I am taking the Olds camping today, 1 hr+ drive to the lake. Hot out today, will probably see 210 for temps. Yes, I have every air direction device in place and will probably see 190 at low speed. I have a 60/40 water coolant mix with water wetter, 3 core Champion aluminum rad, stainless hoses, Flow Kooler high flow pump, high flow 160 thermostat and Stratus fans running constantly.
