Default 305 engine from chevy

Will a 305 chevy engine work in a "85 or"86 cutlass?

it would work but how easily it will work depends on whats in it now, if its original theres either a buick 3.8 or an olds 307 in it unless its a canada car then theres a chevy 305 already in it.

if its the buick or olds an engine its not something a total mechanic newbie should attempt unless you have the time to do it and a buddy or 2 that have experience. its not a 1 weekend thing.

You will have to change frame/motor mounts, transmission (or get and adapter plate), and you will have to make a few wiring changes. Don't know if the exhaust hooks up in the same place i think thats it

I believe the battery is supposed to be on the other side also.

If it already has a 305 in it, then yes it will be the same. Otherwise dont waste your time pulling the olds motor to put in the ****ty 305, Ide personally rather have a 283 then a 305, IMO the 305 is a weak kneed slug. What engine is in the car currently?

A better question would be why?

Not necessarily.... 200-4R's are universal bolt pattern.

Not necessarily. SOME 200-4r trannies are universal bolt pattern, but not all.... came both ways from the factory and would take looking. Also, even if it is or was a 307 car now, some of them only got a th200c out of the factory which wasnt ever a dual bolt pattern housing as far as I recall...

Sorry, but if you are seriously thinking about dropping in some turd 305 instead of ANY engine that would make this car more much exciting to drive, then you aren't trying very hard.

305's SUCK. They have always sucked because they are nothing more than an under-achieving Chevy 350 and you can find a Chevy 350 in any rusty old truck or car.

These are just my opinions.

I thought most were BOP pattern with some being universal to fit Chevys as well. I don't believe there was a Chevy specific 200 4R

There isn't. I don't think. Everyone I've ever seen in person was universal. I saw an online picture of one once that was BOP only. And, I've NEVER seen or even heard of a Chevy only version.

"Oldspower" lets ask about pulling the Olds out and dropping in a Chevy. I am surprised how civil the forum has been .... I hope you wear Kevlar undies. Assuming this is an Olds (or Buick V-6) car .... why is the 305 (of all things) the engine you are going to pick? IMHO a 307 makes more sense, but if you must pull out a 307 ... think about an Olds 350/403 ... heck if you MUST have the brand-x generic Chevy ... atleast think a 350 ... a 305 just seems so pointless

never thought I'd say "I miss the power of a 307"
fixed that with an Olds 350/200-4r
